with a brighter screen which is great, however, Apple
also shrank the battery size - giving it a 10-hour benchmark which is not so great.
If you plan to do a lot of work on your MacBook Pro
, 10 hours is just not enough. So, is there anything you can do to extend your battery life to a couple more hours? Absolutely, all you need are a few swipes and clicks to maximise your machine’s performance.
Here are some simple tricks to get your MacBook Pro’s battery to last a whole day:
1. Adjust screen brightness. The new Mac's screen is 30% more power efficient. But it also can go 67 % brighter when you max it out. This can contribute to your battery usage. Find a well-lighted area to work in and then adjust your MacBook Pro’s setting to three-quarters brightness or less - enough for you to do your work.
2. Turn off Bluetooth and Wifi. Also, mute sound. Bluetooth and wifi can help drain your battery. So if you don’t have a use for them at the moment, turn them off. Here’s how:
● Turn off Bluetooth - In the Menu bar, click the Bluetooth icon. Choose Turn Bluetooth Off.
Or, you can open System Preferences > Bluetooth and click Turn Bluetooth Off.
● Turn off Wi-Fi - Unless your work involves browsing the Internet or sending email(s), turn Wi-Fi off. In the Menu bar, click AirPort and choose Turn Wi-Fi off.
● Mute sound. Tap the Mute Sound button to get rid of alerts and noises you don’t need.
3. Disconnect USB devices. Plugging anything in, like a USB, wakes up a computer communication system that otherwise can snooze in a low-power state. This also included your external drives even if they have their own power supplies.
4. Stick with using Safari. Experts say Apple's browser often does better on battery life. Partly because it won't let the MacBook Pro use its high-performance but power-hungry AMD graphics processor. The built-in Intel GPU isn't as powerful, so sites like Google Maps may not be as smooth, but it uses a lot less energy.
5. Close multiple tabs and shut down any unused apps. Just because you are not using them doesn’t mean they are not hogging your battery. Apps and tabs idling in the background also consume power. Top battery hogs are apps like Adobe Acrobat, Lightroom and Photoshop, and Google Maps in Chrome which demand the Mac's high-performance graphics chip. Avoid these graphically intensive apps. Additionally, don't use any games or 3D graphics if you can help it.
6. Unplug dongles. The MacBook Pro's new USB-C ports are great if you have the right cables and peripherals, but until then you might need dongles that need a chip to convert video data to HDMI or let you plug an older Thunderbolt 2 device into the Mac's Thunderbolt 3 ports. Simply unplug this when you are not using it.
7. Watch video in full-screen mode and turn off closed captioning. You’d be pleased with what you can do with an additional 45 to 60 minutes of battery life.
