Different Water Filtration Methods

Filtered water has a lot of benefits such as improved taste and the removal of harmful chemicals which provide safe drinking water to the whole family. There are many ways of filtering water and you can choose a method based on convenience, budget and what you are looking to remove from the water supply.

It is important to have clean water for drinking as any chemicals you will be taking in will be accumulating in your body giving rise to harmful health conditions. There are many companies that have different filtration systems that can be installed easily in your home. You can get more information on clean filtered water by going through their official websites and understanding the method of filtration they use. Not all water filtration systems are made equally so the quality of water they provide will vary. Some filters only use one technology while others use a combination of technologies to give you clean and safe water. It is actually better to select a filter that has a combination of technologies so that it can remove a wider variety of pollutants from the water.

You can remove

Microbes, chemicals and minerals that come with a high boiling point using the distillation method. Here, water is vapourised at a high temperature and then condensed back into liquid. However, this is not effective against chlorine or VOCs. A common filter you will come across is activated carbon. Carbon can bond to the water and remove contaminants actively. If you are getting tap water for the home, this is a great way of removing chlorine that is commonly used for purifying the public water supply. And the removal of chlorine can improve the taste and odour of the water. However, certain inorganic pollutants like arsenic and fluoride will not be removed by this filter. Mechanical filtration can be used to get rid of dirt and large particles in the water. This is a method that is used in combination with other technologies. Ozone is another example of a filtration system used in combination with others. This filter can kill a wide variety of microbes but these will not remove chemicals from the water.

Deionisation is a method

To remove dissolved salts in the water along with electrically charged ions other than salt. It pinpoints contaminants without an electrical charge and removed them. But this is not effective for removing viruses and bacteria. When there are harmful ions in the water, ion exchange technology can replace these with less harmful ions. You can use this in areas with hard water. Hard water is due to calcium and magnesium in the water. With an ion exchange filtration system, these will be replaced with sodium. There are many filtration systems on the market these days that use reverse osmosis where a semi-permeable membrane is used to separate harmful molecules from the water. However, these molecules need to be larger than water to be removed. These filters also produce wastewater and because of this, it is a method suited for domestic applications only.
